As per CSE (centre for science and environment), about 65% of pollution in Delhi is due to local sources. Dust is a major contribution to air pollution. Study of 2018 on particulate matter (PM) in the air 2.5% emissions, transport contributed 39%, road dust 18%, construction activities 8%, followed by power plants 11% to air pollution in Delhi. Farmers in neighbouring states have come under fire the paddy straw for taking the air quality to a dangerous level in the capital city.
Stubble burning:-
1.Stubble burning is the practice of removing crop residue from fields post-harvest by setting fire to it.
2.A/c to the agricultural ministry, 23 million tonnes of paddy straw is burnt in Punjab, Haryana and U.P every year.
Impact of stubble burning:-
1.Nutrients present in the stubble are wasted in burning.
2.Burning leads to rising in the ground temperature.
3.Livestock is impacted by crop burning with milk yields coming down by 50%.
